No. 4's trash talk keeps stink from fading

"Sadly, it's the story that just won't go away.
Every time we think it's over, its ugly head resurfaces in another ugly way.
And every time something new is said on the issue, stories and columns pop up. And then readers who are fans of a certain someone flood e-mail boxes with complaints that the only reason it keeps being brought up is because lousy sportswriters are keeping it alive.
Well, this story - which should have been put to bed months and months ago - is still alive because the main character can't seem to shut up.
By this point, anyone who doesn't know to whom we're referring has only stumbled upon this publication by accident.
Of course, we're talking about Brett Favre, who last week shared the following nugget with Sports Illustrated's Peter King:
"Part of me coming back last year, I have to admit now, was sticking it to Ted."
Ted, of course, is Green Bay general manager Ted Thompson.
To his credit, Thompson refused to fire back when asked about the comment at the NFL combine last week.
But the point is, there never should have been a comment that needed Thompson's restraint.
Favre had a brilliant career in Green Bay. Sixteen years of excellence that may never be surpassed by another Packer quarterback.
He never missed a game, making 253 consecutive starts. He owns a number of NFL records, including career touchdown passes and passing yards.
He had the kind of career that, under ordinary circumstances, would lead to an immediate ceremony to retire No. 4 next season.
In fact, that's what was set up a year ago when Favre retired. His No. 4 was supposed to be retired in a ceremony before the season opener last Sept. 9 against Minnesota.
Then came the "itch" to play again.
And then came the whole soap opera and the trade to the New York Jets.
If only it had ended there. If only."
