"Linebacker Keith Brooking, a five-time Pro Bowl player, appears headed for free agency, according to his agent.
"We had multiple conversations this weekend with the Falcons regarding their interest in re-signing Keith," Pat Dye Jr. wrote in an e-mail to the Journal-Constitution. "At this time, I think both sides are struggling a little bit to assess his market value."
If the two sides can't reach a deal by Friday, Brooking, who's played his entire career with the Falcons and is the last remaining player from the 1998 Super Bowl team, would hit the open market.
"It may take exploring his options in free agency to give us all a better sense of where he is in the current universe of NFL linebackers," Dye said. "Our discussions with the Falcons will be ongoing during this process."
Brooking had a playing time clause in his contract. He surpassed the amount of playing time and that made the last year of his seven-year, $41 million contract void."
