Panthers not alone in coordinator search by Steve Reed
I did a little research and did you know that 21 of 32 NFL teams will have replaced their defensive coordinator from last season, including three in the NFC South -- Carolina, New Orleans and Tampa Bay. Kind of amazing to think that only 11 teams are retaining their defensive coordinators.
Along with Carolina, the other teams who have yet to fill defensive coordinator vacancies include Dallas, Kansas City, Oakland and Tennessee.
--Now that the Carolina Panthers have had a chance to regroup from losing five assistant coaches last week (they did replace one) during Senior Bowl week, look for general manager Marty Hurney and coach John Fox to begin filling the final four spots this week.
Obviously the most pressing need is the defensive coordinator position. There are several familiar names out there including Jim Haslett, Romeo Crennel and Dave McGinnis, but the team may look for a younger replacement knowing that basically Fox has the iron hand when it comes to calling the shots on defense.
If the Panthers don't fill the coordinator position this week, that could be a strong indication the team is interested in a coach off the staff of the Pittsburgh Steelers or the Arizona Cardinals, who will be competing in that little thing they call the Super Bowl this Sunday in Tampa, Fla.
We'll keep you updated, but so far things are pretty quiet.
