Panthers QB coach McCoy bolts for Denver, possible replacement ready
January 18
Gaston Gazette
"The Carolina Panthers are on the verge of making their first coaching change of the off-season.
Panthers quarterbacks coach Mike McCoy has accepted the Denver Broncos offensive coordinator position and there's a chance he could be replaced by Rip Scherer, who worked alongside current Panthers offensive coordinator Jeff Davidson in Cleveland.
Scherer arrived in Charlotte and interviewed with the team on Saturday team sources told Carolina Growl last night. It's unclear if he's the leading candidate for the job.
Scherer joined the Browns in 2005 and was credited with helping develop quarterback Derek Anderson and also worked alongside rookie Brady Quinn. He's spent more than 33 years in coaching, working as head coach at James Madison and Memphis.
As for McCoy, he's set to return home to where his NFL career began.
McCoy has spent the past nine seasons with the Carolina Panthers, the second-longest tenure of any assistant coach behind only Richard Williamson.
McCoy first joined the NFL with the Broncos as an undrafted rookie in 1995."
