I have a great idea for a talk show. The hosts would be Panther running back DeAngelo Williams and guard Keydrick Vincent, and their special correspondent would be defensive tackle Damione Lewis, although Lewis could also be a host if the sofa were big enough. They wouldn’t even need guests. They’d talk and joke and make fun of teammates and everybody else and they’d be hilarious.
The Lions came out loose and free, moving 80 yards on their first drive and 65 on their third. They did not look like a winless team, not until five minutes remained. That’s when Detroit linebacker Anthony Cannon delivered a late hit on a punt return in front of an official, and the penalty pushed the Lions from their 28 to their 14. From the 28 you can breathe. From the 14, you’re aware of the end zone lurking behind you. It was Detroit’s only penalty. On the first play after the flag, quarterback Dante Culpepper was intercepted. On the play after that, the Panthers scored.
Even though Julius Peppers insists that sacks are a not a valid measurement of a defensive lineman’s production, he added two Sunday, giving him nine for the season. He also forced a fumble. Although sacks might be overrated, they tend to disrupt an offense, excite teammates and make the enormous contract he awaits even larger.
DeAngelo Williams said he was pulling for Atlanta against Denver Sunday, because he didn’t want to play the Falcons when they were coming off a loss. Were you also pulling for Tampa Bay against Minnesota?
“Uhhh, no,” Williams said.
