Floyd Reese new piece to Patriots brain trust
January 28
Boston Herald

"Given the courtship of Floyd Reese came on the heels of vice president of player personnel Scott Pioli’s departure to Kansas City, it’s reasonable to assume the Patriots weren’t ready to hand all of Pioli’s responsibilities to heir apparent Nick Caserio.

That’s not a knock on Caserio. It just means with only two years as the director of player personnel under his belt, he may not be quite ready to tackle the full job load, from player evaluation to contract negotiations to the management of the scouting department.

In Reese, who was responsible for building the Tennessee Titans’ 1999 AFC championship team, the Pats secured an experienced football man who will provide invaluable expertise in talent evaluation and contracts.

The Patriots officially brought the former Titans general manager on board yesterday, giving him the title of senior football adviser.

Reese, who had been working as an analyst for ESPN, indicated during a conference call that he had been in talks with the Patriots for 7-10 days. Pioli was hired by the Chiefs on Jan. 14.

While Reese did not reveal contract terms, he said, “My plan is to be there for more than one year.”

Reese, a longtime friend of Bill Belichick’s, indicated he planned to move to Foxboro with his family and work out of Gillette Stadium. While he didn’t go into details about his job, he will be working in tandem with Caserio, who remains as the director of player personnel for a third season and, according to the team, will manage the daily operations of the personnel department.

Reese has yet to meet Caserio, but could serve as a mentor while also dealing with the nuts and bolts of contract issues and perhaps player evaluation.

“Floyd and I go back a long way, practically to the beginning for both of us,” Belichick said in a statement. “He has handled as much as one person can possibly handle in this league and to a certain extent, so has Nick. In Nick and Floyd, we have two outstanding men who each bring a wealth of knowledge and flexibility to this organization. I look forward to joining with both of them and working toward the common goal of our team’s improvement and success.”"
