South Florida invited to bid on Super Bowl XLVII in 2013
January 27
Miami Herald
"Even as the weeklong activities for Super Bowl XLIII began Monday with the arrival of the Pittsburgh Steelers and Arizona Cardinals, the folks in charge of South Florida's Super Bowl aspirations were doing work on the 2010 game, which will be played at Dolphin Stadium , and thinking about holding another game in 2013.

''We've been invited by the NFL to bid on the 2013 game,'' South Florida Super Bowl Host Committee chairman Rodney Barreto said Monday. ``You have to be invited by the NFL to bid, and we are preparing our response.''

South Florida will enter its bid by the April deadline, Barreto said, with the hopes of landing a record 11th Super Bowl.

But if 2013 seems a bit far off to think about, Barreto and about 15 members of the Host Committee will be in town this week doing legwork for the 2010 game.

''All our key staff will be there much of the week,'' Barreto said. ``We'll have security people, events people looking to see if there's room to learn something new.''

Super Bowl XLIV at Dolphin Stadium will come with some tweaks. The Pro Bowl will be played there the weekend preceding the championship game.

And for the first time since South Florida began holding Super Bowls in 1968, the headquarters hotel and media center will be based in Broward County instead of in Miami-Dade. Barreto said the Host Committee looked at using the Miami Beach Convention Center as the media center, as it had previously, but the complex is booked.

Instead, the media center will be housed at the Broward County Convention Center, Barreto said.

The media center for Super Bowl XLIII began buzzing early Monday as reams of information began streaming to the journalists from a record 28 countries arriving in the Tampa area.

Japan and Mexico each have 22 media outlets covering this game, and there will be a total of 141 international media organizations.

Those organizations will be able to interview the players -- and also the fringe players who make the Super Bowl an event."
