Giants are Super Bowl favorites in Vegas
December 30
Pittsburgh Tribune Review
"Las Vegas sports books favor the New York Giants over the 11 other teams in the NFL playoffs to win the Super Bowl, giving 2-to-1 odds on the NFC's No. 1 seed to repeat as champions.
The Tennessee Titans are the favorite among AFC teams to win a title at 4-1, closely followed by the Steelers at 9-2.
The Giants have the easiest road to the Super Bowl on Feb. 1, while the AFC teams are more evenly matched, oddsmaker Mike Seba of Las Vegas Sports Consultants said Monday.
"You want to be in the NFC," he said. "The AFC is closer bunched - there's not a lot of difference between your top seed and the six seed."
The Arizona Cardinals are the biggest longshots for the title at 40-1; in the AFC, the Miami Dolphins have 30-1 odds.
Pro Bowl to be moved before Super bowl
The Pro Bowl will be played one week before the Super Bowl in 2010 and both games will be staged in Dolphin Stadium, a person directly involved in the decision told The Associated Press.
Barring a schedule change, next season's Pro Bowl will take place Jan. 31, 2010, with the Super Bowl that year on Feb. 7. The league's plan is for players on the AFC and NFC championship squads not to take part in the Pro Bowl.
Esiason: Jets could entice Cowher
Boomer Esiason has worked alongside former Steelers coach Bill Cowher the last two years on the set of the CBS NFL pregame show. Though Esiason admits Cowher has not tipped his hand about the possibility of returning to the sideline, Esiason thinks it's possible Cowher could be enticed into coaching the Jets.
"The guy sits and watches the games as intensely as ever," Esiason said. "If somebody made a hard run at him, it would be hard for him to turn it down. If he got the money offered to him that I would think (the Jets) would have, I think he might come back."
But Esiason admits it's impossible to read the tea leaves with Cowher.
"He is not giving any of us at CBS the real insight into what he's looking at," Esiason said.
Ex-NFLer accused of child rape
An extradition hearing has been scheduled for a former NFL player accused of child rape.
Danny Villa was ordered held on $50,000 bail yesterday pending the Jan. 6 hearing in Tucson, Ariz. Massachusetts authorities want him returned to the state to face three counts of rape of a child over 14 and three counts of enticing a minor. Villa's lawyer says his client will plead not guilty.
Villa played offensive line in the NFL for 12 seasons, including six with the New England Patriots.
Chargers owner has dementia
Billionaire developer and San Diego Chargers owner Alex Spanos has announced in a letter that he suffers from dementia.
The 85-year-old was in the owner's box for the Chargers' division-clinching win over the Denver Broncos on Sunday, but family members wanted to tell the public that his infrequent appearances lately have been because of his declining health."
