Spags Has Secret Meeting With Jets
January 16
New York Post
" Though the odds of Steve Spagnuolo remaining with the Giants improve as each job opening around the NFL gets filled, it turns out the Jets did meet with the Big Blue defensive coordinator this week.
According to a source familiar with the Jets' coaching search, team owner Woody Johnson and general manager Mike Tannenbaum had a clandestine meeting with Spagnuolo on Tuesday at Johnson's Manhattan office.
The second meeting was expected because Johnson was out of the country when Spagnuolo first interviewed with the Jets on Jan. 3, but Tuesday's meeting was kept hush-hush.
The meeting was kept secret at the request of Spagnuolo's agent, Bob LaMonte, a source said. This seems like an odd tactic because the appearance of a lack of contact between the Jets and Spagnuolo led to speculation he was no longer a leading candidate for the job.
Despite this development, Ravens defensive coordinator Rex Ryan is still the favorite to land the job. Spagnuolo, Jets offensive coordinator Brian Schottenheimer and Cardinals assistant head coach/offensive line Russ Grimm remain the other candidates for the Jets job.
Spagnuolo yesterday interviewed with the Rams in Los Angeles, where their owners reside. He was one of four finalists to fill the St. Louis vacancy, but the NFL Network reported yesterday that another of those candidates, Vikings assistant head coach/defensive coordinator Leslie Frazier, will be named Rams coach by tomorrow.
Ryan and Cowboys offensive coordinator Jason Garrett were the other candidates for the St. Louis job. Jim Haslett, who was named interim head coach in St. Louis after Scott Linehan was fired following an 0-4 start, had been on the Rams' list, but GM Billy Devaney said yesterday Haslett had been told he will not be retained by the team.
Spagnuolo has interviewed with and been passed over already by the Broncos, Browns and Lions - who yesterday named Titans defensive coordinator Jim Schwartz as their new head coach. "
