"An apparent pledge from Carolina Panthers wide receiver Steve Smith might have put the Harding University High School Marching Band of Gold over the top, in its effort to raise enough money to march in the Inauguration Day Parade next Tuesday in Washington.
A caller identifying himself as Smith told hosts of the morning show Tuesday at WPEG-FM (Power 98) that he would donate $25,000 to the Harding band, so it could make the trip.
The band performed Saturday night at halftime of the Panthers' NFL playoff game against the Arizona Cardinals. At the time, Harding High band director Anthony Jones said the band was $17,000 short of reaching its goal of raising $50,000.
Harding's was the only band from North Carolina invited to participate in the parade, which will follow the inauguration of Barack Obama as President.
Band officials learned in December that they had been invited to march in the parade. The 120-member unit has been holding a variety of fundraising events since then, trying to reach the goal."
