Kasay on miss: 'No excuses'
December 22
Charlotte Observer
"John Kasay has been kicking field goals in the NFL for 18 seasons in all kinds of conditions.
So, despite the cold winds that swirled around Giants Stadium on Sunday night, Kasay felt confident his 50-yard attempt with four seconds remaining in regulation would break a 28-28 tie and give the Carolina Panthers a victory against the New York Giants.
Instead, his kick - while long enough - slipped to the left side of the goalpost. The miss, only Kasay's second of the season, sent the game into overtime, when the Giants would eventually win 34-28..
Lining up for the kick, Kasay made a mental note of the wind, which was blowing right to left. As Jason Kyle snapped the ball to holder Jason Baker, Kasay appeared to hesitate a bit. Then he kicked it.
"You try and judge it the best you can," Kasay said of the conditions. "I felt pretty good about it. I didn't start it as wide as I would have liked.
"I knew it was going to be really close because of the wind, but it just didn't hold its line."
Kasay didn't say what happened when he stopped during his approach to the ball, then stepped into the kick.
"It didn't make any difference," he said. "I reset. It was fine.""
