Haynesworth Indicted on Two Traffic Charges

"Washington Redskins defensive tackle Albert Haynesworth was indicted yesterday on two misdemeanor traffic charges stemming from a December accident in Tennessee in which another driver was seriously injured.

A Williamson County, Tenn., grand jury handed down the indictment on charges of reckless driving and having an expired registration. Reckless driving carries a maximum punishment of six months in jail and a $500 fine, and Haynesworth could receive another 30 days in jail and $50 fine for the other charge, according to the district attorney's office.

Haynesworth, a two-time all-pro performer with the Tennessee Titans who signed with the Redskins on Feb. 27, was released after surrendering Wednesday. Haynesworth, who plans to attend the start of Washington's offseason conditioning program Monday, is scheduled to be arraigned March 30. He does not have to appear in court.

Haynesworth was unavailable to comment, and his agent, Chad Speck, declined to comment. A phone message left for Haynesworth's attorney, Glenn Funk, was not immediately returned, and the Redskins did not comment.

The grand jury, whose proceedings are secret, had been expected to meet Monday, and Kim Helper, the Williamson County district attorney, released its findings yesterday.

"The prosecution [of Haynesworth] is moving forward, but it's way too early in the process to speculate on" what the outcome could be, Helper said. "It's really hard for me to speculate in a general sense. Whenever you're talking about a criminal case, there are a lot of factors that go into any negotiation. You would look at someone's criminal history, and the facts and circumstance that come into it, but every [case] is different."

Corey Edmondson suffered "severe injuries" that left him disabled after the accident that occurred on Dec. 13, said Jon Perry, Edmondson's attorney. Four days before the accident, Haynesworth received 30 days' probation and was fined $1,000 in court fees after he reportedly was driving in excess of 100 mph on an interstate highway. "
