Chicago Bears' John Tait retires officially
March 13
Chicago Tribune
"The Bears made several roster moves Thursday, but none involved unrestricted free agent John St. Clair.
As expected, veteran tackle John Tait was moved to the team's reserve/retired list after officially filing his retirement papers. Tait walked away from the $4.8 million he was due in the final year of his contract.
With Tait gone, the Bears have to fill a void at right tackle. The immediate plan is to re-sign St. Clair, who remains on the market after passing on the Bears' initial three-year contract offer.
St. Clair wants to stay with the Bears and likely would start at right tackle. The Bears signed free-agent lineman Frank Omiyale from Carolina, and Omiyale could challenge Roberto Garza for a starting spot at guard. If St. Clair goes elsewhere, Omiyale could start at tackle. The Bears could pursue Kevin Shaffer, a 29-year-old tackle released by the Cleveland Browns."
