"Cardinals quarterback Kurt Warner was named the NFL Walter Payton Man of the Year shortly before kickoff of Super Bowl XLIII.
Warner was honored for the numerous charitable causes that he and his wife, Brenda , support. In the past year, he has aided flood victims in his home state of Iowa, helped build homes with Habitat for Humanity and helped numerous disadvantaged people through his foundation, First Things First.
"I am humbled the Lord has given me such an amazing life to impact others," Warner said in a statement released by the NFL. "Of all the awards given to NFL athletes, the Walter Payton Man of the Year is the one that stands out above the rest to me because of what it represents."
Commissioner Roger Goodell and Payton's widow, Connie , presented the award to Warner, who won for the first time. Vikings center Matt Birk and Eagles safety Brian Dawkins were also finalists.
Warner's records
With his 377 yards passing Sunday, Warner now owns the top three passing performances in Super Bowl history. He set the record with 414 against Tennessee in 2000 and also threw for 365 against New England in 2002.
Warner's total yardage of 1,156 topped Joe Montana's record of 1,142, and his 11 touchdown passes this postseason matched Montana's record set in the 1989 postseason."
