Cardinals' Fitzgerald keeps a low profile, unless he's on the field

"Is Larry Fitzgerald Jr. the bestathlete a journalist has everproduced?Let's see: There's HoustonAstros utility player David Newhan, son of retired Los Angeles Times writer Ross Newhan. And there's Martin Brodeur, thefuture Hall of Fame goalie, although his dad was a teamphotographer, and so technically not a journalist. And then there is . . . Hmmm.Nope. That about does it."Obviously, I'm blessed," Larry Fitzgerald Sr. said yesterday. "And I believe there's some divine intervention."Well, of course, there is.You're a sports writer, for God's sake, a sports editor of theMinnesota Spokesman-Recorder, host of a radio show. You looked like the rest of us yesterday at Cardinals practice, schlepping around your computer bag, stretching out those golf shirts in all the wrong places."I was a pretty good tackle in high school," Larry Sr. protested. "All-American. Then went to Indiana State University. I was the second most famous Larry there. There was some guy named Larry Bird when I got there."I was there to bring the football program along. He was there to bring the basketballprogram along. And I guess we all see who did the best job."Yeah, but here's the thing: Bird's kid isn't in any pro league. His kid isn't being heralded, at 25, as an under-the-radar superstar capable of flipping a game on its head, the way he did against the Carolina Panthers last week. He isn't building areputation for big, loud catches and quiet little celebrations afterward, isn't providing a refreshing contrast to the me-first receivers who poison our television screens each Sunday with his HAC. Humility After the Catch."
