Singletary a Bay Area revelation
January 4 San Francisco Chronicle columnist Scott Ostler
"It's time to re-evaluate Pantsgate.
When Mike Singletary dropped his trousers at halftime of his NFL head-coaching debut, the man desperate to be taken seriously as a coach instantly became your loopy uncle who tries to juggle the fine china.
He was a national joke.
Somehow Singletary managed to keep his job, regain his dignity, and earn a real coaching contract.
How did he do it?
Here's the bottom line, so to speak: Singletary is a man of action.
Unlike his predecessor, and other Bay Area pro football coaches and baseball managers we've been exposed to in recent years, Singletary digs into the batter's box, points to the centerfield bleachers, and swings from the heels.
He has led us out of the wilderness of vague blather and wishy-washy, so-called management.
Considering how the 49ers eventually responded after Singletary's wardrobe malfunction, what seemed like a halftime vaudeville shtick might be seen by posterity as Rockne-esque. And I'm not talking about Rockne Balboa."Link
