Cowher says he'll sit out this season
January 4 Newark Star-Ledger
"Bill Cowher ended all speculation he would coach anywhere this season, including the Jets, saying on the NFL Today show that he "was flattered by the attention but the timing right now isn't right and I don't plan on coaching next year.''
Cowher's first public comments seem to confirm the belief that he simply didn't want to coach this season and his decision to tell the Jets he wasn't interested had nothing to do with owner Woody Johnson being out of the country this week.
According to someone with knowledge of the team's search, the Jets had taken issue with a report that Cowher didn't want to interview with the team because Johnson was out of town. He's scheduled to return on tomorrow and will sit in on all future interviews.
"Mr. Johnson has been talking to (general manager) Mike Tannenbaum a minimum of 10 times a day,'' said the person, who requested anonymity because he's not authorized to speak for the team. "He knows exactly what's going on.''"Link
