"A coaching shake-up for the Bears could involve the addition of Rod Marinelli, but the agent for the fired Lions coach doesn't anticipate an immediate move.
Marinelli was at Halas Hall on Friday with Bears coach Lovie Smith. Frank Bauer downplayed his client's visit, even though Bears general manager Jerry Angelo said Tuesday he would love to have Marinelli on the staff. Smith expressed admiration for Marinelli as well.
"Lovie and Rod are best friends," Bauer said. "They have the same philosophies. They are like brothers. But Rod is going to take his time with this and look at different situations. That's why I don't think anything will happen today."
Marinelli was dismissed after his team finished 0-16. Marinelli and Smith worked on the same staff with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers from 1996-2000, Marinelli as defensive line coach and Smith in charge of linebackers. Angelo was the Bucs' director of player personnel from 1987-2000.
Bauer said Marinelli wants to remain a head coach but understands the circumstances. Marinelli spent three seasons with the Lions, finishing with a 10-38 record.
"I think anybody would love to be a head coach, but [Rod] would become an assistant and then come back through," Bauer said."
