Aaron Rodgers not quite good enough
December 23
Chicago Tribune columnist Dan Pompei
"As has been the case in many games this season, Aaron Rodgers was not the problem Monday night—but he wasn't the solution either.

Overall, Rodgers played pretty well, completing 24 of 39 passes for 260 yards and two touchdowns with one interception in the Packers' 20-17 overtime loss to the Bears at Soldier Field.

It was what he failed to do, however, that Packers fans will talk about in a season defined by seven losses by four or fewer points.

Specifically, he failed to see a wide-open Donald Lee in the left corner of the end zone in the fourth quarter. Rodgers was pressured from his left, so he looked right and threw to Donald Driver. The pass was incomplete, and the Packers had to settle for a 28-yard Mason Crosby field goal and a 17-10 lead instead of what could have been a 21-10 edge.

"I didn't see him," Rodgers said. "I looked for him but didn't see him."

Packers coach Mike McCarthy said he thought Rodgers had a solid day.

"We had some big-play opportunities on offense we didn't hit," McCarthy said. "Other than that, he managed the game very well and threw the ball well in those conditions."

On the Packers' second possession, Rodgers threw a pretty pass to Driver of about 50 yards. Driver had his man beat on a post route, and the safety help was late getting over. It appeared Driver could have caught the ball, especially if he had laid out. Instead of giving the Packers a 6-0 lead, the pass fell to the ground.

They tried the same play again in the second quarter, and Driver was open again, running past Corey Graham. Rodgers' pass was on target, and Driver dived for this one. He caught the ball but couldn't hang on.

Rodgers bemoaned scoring only 17 points and making three trips inside the Bears' 28 in the second half yet coming away with only three points.

For all of Rodgers' chances, the Packers' biggest play of the first half came from backup Matt Flynn. In punt formation on fourth-and-2 from the Bears' 37, the rookie quarterback from LSU lined up as an upback, took the snap and ran 6 yards for a first down.

Four plays later Rodgers hit Greg Jennings for a 7-yard touchdown pass in front of Trumaine McBride, giving Green Bay the first points of the game.

Rodgers did not appear affected by the frigid temperatures, and neither did the Packers' game plan. McCarthy said Rodgers was able to make all the throws in warm-ups, so he didn't take anything out of the game plan because of the conditions.

"I have full confidence in Aaron Rodgers," McCarthy said. "I have no problem calling any pass play."

Rodgers said the footballs were slick because they were so cold, but he was comfortable enough to not wear a glove on his left hand. Rodgers did not play like the California boy he is.

It's interesting. In the frigid temperatures at Soldier Field one year ago, Brett Favre threw two interceptions as his team was blown out 35-7. Afterward, he complained about the cold.

So it still is better to have Rodgers than Favre."
