Linebacker Mike Peterson is ready for a reunion.
Peterson signed a two-year contract with the Falcons Tuesday after agreeing to terms late Monday. He will play outside linebacker and help fill a hole along the depleted unit. Last season’s main starting outside linebackers, Michael Boley (New York Giants) and Keith Brooking (Dallas), left during free agency.
The chance to play for Falcons head coach Mike Smith was a factor in getting a deal done quickly. Peterson played under Smith and defensive coordinator Brian VanGorder in Jacksonville, where he spent the last six seasons.
Peterson shares his insights on joining the Falcons.
Q. Happy to be coming to the Falcons?
A. Oh yeah, I’m definitely happy to be coming to the Falcons. This is definitely a place that I wanted to be. I’m just happy the deal was able to get done quickly.
Q. Was the chance to play again for Mike Smith a big factor for you?
A. I know what’s expected from Coach Smith. That was a big factor in me signing with the Falcons.
Q. You are still pretty cool with Coach Smith?
A. Yes, we kept in touch throughout the season. Coach Smith, as well as the defensive line coach Ray Hamilton and the (defensive) coordinator (Brian) VanGorder. So I’m definitely familiar with a lot of the coaches on the staff. It’s just a big plus.
Q. What type of impact can you can have on the Falcons defense?
A. First of all, I can come in and bring some leadership to the defense. Bring some excitement and energy to the team as well. I know the intensity and energy level that’s needed to win in this league. I think that’s a plus that I can bring to the team.
Q. What’s your preference, the middle or weakside linebacker? Have you played any strongside?
A. I’m coming in trying to play whatever Coach Smith needs me to play. I’ve played all three before. I think I can do well at all three.
Q. What happened with you and coach Jack Del Rio last year (Peterson was suspended for one game and demoted after an incident at practice last season)?
A. I’m just ready to put that behind me. I think it was blown out of proportion. It was just two guys who wanted to win. To me, that’s history and I’m looking forward to my time here in Atlanta.
Q. Are you friends with any other Falcons on the roster?
A. I’m familiar with Tony Gilbert and Jamaal Fudge and a couple of other guys. I don’t know them personally, but I know them from playing against you guys in the past. I’m just looking forward to coming here, joining the guys and trying to bring a world title to the city.
